The obverse feature of the Gold Eagle is based on a replication of Augustus St. Gaudens, the well known design for the Double Eagle created in 1907. The iconic lady Liberty figure is depicted striding ahead with a torch in her right hand together with olive branch in her left.

The reverse was designed by Miley Busiek, illustrates a family of gold eagles with the male carrying an olive branch and flying above the nest of eagle hatchlings together with a female eagle. The fine gold weight of the coin and its face value also displayed on the reverse of the bullion.

All four denominations have been available as bullion versions ever since the series was made public in 1986. Proof coins were at first only available in the 1 oz size. In the subsequent year of issue the ½ oz gold coin size was included. The  ¼ and 1/10 oz bullion were then offered as proofs in 3-rd year. There are also collectible un-circulated versions of these gold coins which was available in all four denominations during year 2006 to year 2008.

Over 13 million of the 1 oz coin are actually minted and distributed since the coin was introduced in 1986. Solely in year 2009, about 1.4 million American gold eagles were produced. In 2008, at the peak of the credit-financial turmoil, the mint was actually forced to head to an allocation program as it could not follow burgeoning demand. Yet, it produced 710,000 of 1 oz coins during the year. Down to comparison, the U.S. Mint generated slightly over 140,000 of 1 oz coins throughout the somewhat quiet year of 2007.
